The Hidden Rooms of Incoprea: Toby Mikle’s Art, Films, and a Life of Making

THE INCOPREA ARCHIVE · A GUIDED SHOWCASE

Look past the front page.

A small painting of a workbench. A city assembled from decades. An alien shop crowded with impossible customers. A storm over St. Paul. A world built so that you can walk into it.

These are all doorways into Incoprea, the continually changing body of work by Minnesota artist and illustrator Toby Mikle. Seen one at a time, they can seem to belong to different portfolios. Seen together, they reveal an artist returning to a few enduring questions: What is worth noticing? How much can a picture hold? What happens to places after people leave? And how can an imagined world become something another person can experience?

Dense black-and-white drawing of alien visitors, curious objects, small mechanisms, and curling plants.
Alien Museum · Digital pen-and-tablet drawing. The Digital Art page captions this image Alien Museum poster and explicitly identifies the gallery as digital pen-and-tablet work, not AI. View the original context.

Incoprea has grown across personal websites, drawing and painting galleries, small Blogger projects, YouTube channels, illustrated books, digital experiments, and virtual spaces. That growth has left some of its most revealing work several clicks away from the main entrance. A brief archive entry or a page with a number for its address can contain an entire visual world.

This is a long walk through those rooms: a showcase of the work, the documented stories around it, and the connections that become visible when older pieces return to view. You can read straight through, choose a medium below, or follow the artwork links and get pleasantly sidetracked. The images come from the existing archive; the captions identify the medium and any useful limits in the original record.

New poster

2020 Sketchbook (inspiration)

Started a new large poster. What used to take me 2 or 3 months of work, I am thinking will take me only about 2 or 3 days to detail #wontrush I am recording the process and will create a video/poster/nft. If this format works I can do more!

Part one is done and on YouTube. Part two will be the remaining details, posted as we go with a part two video and poster prints at the end.

*Update. This project kicked my ass. Better to stop and call it halfway then to finish it half assed and rushed. Clearing my computer space of visual software and working on audio only for now. THIS POSTER will be the first project I come back to. I also want to make an ultra detailed truck stop too, like with all the products and mayhem. I think it would be fun to relive all my truck stop night shift memories. So, AUDIO (will post on SoundCloud), then back to this eventually.
