Behind SunVox is one man whose name isn’t splashed across billboards but is whispered with reverence in music tech circles: Alexander Zolotov — or as many users know him, “ACID”. There’s a certain mystique about Zolotov because he’s not a YouTuber or influencer; he builds tools. And SunVox is one of the most personal, idiosyncratic tools in music software today.
Zolotov’s design philosophy seems rooted in efficiency and depth over polish and flash. SunVox doesn’t hold your hand — it trusts you to explore. Its UI isn’t pretty by mainstream standards, but it’s functional and steeped in logic that a sonic thinker can appreciate.
Some speculate that Zolotov sees software as musical instrument first, product second. That would explain SunVox’s quirks — why it isn’t more user-friendly, why it’s so flexible, why it doesn’t follow the typical plugin ecosystem. And that’s exactly what gives it character. Zolotov had to follow constraints in the apple and android version, so the free download version is ALWAYS Much better for things like allowing system access for importing files or even being able to change the screen size.
