Installation art is built around a viewer's encounter with a space: objects, architecture, sound, moving image, light, and movement may all become parts of one temporary or permanent environment. Its unit is often not a portable object but a set of relationships that changes how a room or site is read.
The 30 artists in this article use installation to stage memory, politics, ritual, narrative, material experiment, and public participation.
